The Durham ReStore isn’t just a place to shop for affordable furniture, home goods and building materials; it’s a hub of community impact powered by a team committed to Habitat’s mission. They combine passion, experience and purpose to operate a store that feeds into affordable housing efforts in the Triangle.
Mike McVey, Store Manager
Mike’s journey with Habitat for Humanity began on the build site where he volunteered for the first time with Durham Habitat. He worked alongside a homebuyer and was deeply moved by their connection while building a home. Seven years later, he started working at the Durham ReStore. He feels purpose in knowing that every day—good or challenging—he is helping someone.
One of his favorite parts of the role is educating shoppers about how their purchases directly support Habitat’s affordable housing projects in the Triangle. He also values connecting with Habitat homeowners who complete “sweat equity” volunteer hours in the store. On tough days, he finds inspiration in reading messages on the store’s mission wall where homeowners have shared messages of impact and gratitude.
Mike grew up outside of Burlington, N.C. He is a big college basketball fan and enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his family. His wife and one of his daughters also work for Habitat! He studied communications at East Carolina University, specifically focused in broadcast media. While working at a station in Wilmington, he had the opportunity to fly with the Blue Angels! His favorite food is steak or hamburgers, and his favorite color is purple.
Jonathan Marshall, Assistant Store Manager
Jonathan first came to the ReStore as a volunteer. When a position opened, he jumped at the chance to join the team and has now been part of the Durham ReStore for seven years. He says the best part of his job is helping customers find items they may not have been able to afford or find elsewhere. Whether it’s someone transforming their home with new flooring or discovering an unexpected treasure, he loves seeing people leave the store with a smile. Like most of the team, he takes pride in sharing Habitat’s mission with the community to ensure everyone knows what they’re supporting when they make a purchase or donation.
Jonathan grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C., and studied social work at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. When he’s not at work, Jonathan enjoys gaming, playing rugby and spending time with his wife and their cat, Bonnie. Fun fact: although he’s been playing rugby for 12 years, he’s never broken a bone! His favorite food is pizza, and his favorite color is black!
Brandon McKinnon, Assistant Store Manager and Volunteer Coordinator
Brandon joined the Durham ReStore team five years ago, following a recommendation from a nonprofit where he worked before the pandemic. As the volunteer coordinator, Brandon works closely with volunteers and helps ensure they not only have a positive experience but understand how they’re making a difference. Whether he’s delegating tasks to new volunteers, organizing the sales floor or operating the forklift, he’s passionate about all the work that goes into the store’s success.
His favorite moments are when customers find exactly what they need, often lifting unseen burdens in the process. He loves working with Habitat because he feels and sees the store’s impact every day!
He grew up in Clio, S.C., and studied sociology at NC State. Outside the ReStore, Brandon enjoys gaming, working out and playing basketball. His favorite food is jerk chicken (or any Caribbean cuisine for that matter). His favorite color is red!
